Representative Tom Kean Jr., a vulnerable New Jersey Republican facing intense Democrat opposition, has disappeared from Capitol Hill for over one month with no explanation, alarming colleagues who report complete radio silence when attempting contact.
Missing Since Early March
Kean was last seen on Capitol Hill on March 5, 2026, which was also the last time he cast a vote. Since that date, the congressman has missed nearly 50 roll call votes, raising serious questions about his ability to represent New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. Fellow Republicans Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, the other two GOP members of New Jersey’s delegation, confirm they have called and texted Kean repeatedly out of concern for his wellbeing but received no response whatsoever.
Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska told reporters he did not even realize Kean had been missing until he tried to find him on the House floor this week. Several New York Republicans who have worked closely with Kean on regional issues report identical experiences of unanswered calls and texts. House GOP leadership has not addressed the situation with the Republican conference, leaving members confused and concerned about their colleague’s whereabouts and condition.
Health Issues Claimed, Details Scarce
Bill Palatucci, a Republican National Committee member and attorney for the Kean campaign, finally broke the silence by acknowledging the congressman is experiencing unspecified health issues. Palatucci attempted to downplay the political implications, suggesting voters will be sympathetic and claiming the absence will be forgotten by fall elections. However, he provided no timeline for Kean’s return or specifics about the medical situation preventing the congressman from any communication with colleagues or constituents for over 30 days.
Political Vulnerability Intensifies Crisis
The timing could not be worse for Republicans. Kean represents a critical swing district that President Trump won by just two points in the most recent presidential election, while Joe Biden carried the same district by four points in 2020. Democrats have identified Kean as one of their top targets for defeat this fall, with four major Democrat candidates already competing for the nomination to challenge him. Democrat Representative Rob Menendez expressed hope that Kean is doing well but confirmed he has heard nothing about the situation. The prolonged absence without explanation hands Democrats a powerful campaign issue in a district already leaning left.
