A Nicaraguan national living illegally in the United States faces two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide after allegedly attacking his ex-girlfriend and her new partner with a machete inside a Green Bay home. The brutal assault left both victims hospitalized with serious injuries.
Silent Attack With Deadly Weapon
David Joel Mairena-Garcia, 29, used a key to enter the residence on Edgewood Drive before launching his attack without warning. The 26-year-old woman, who shares a child with Mairena-Garcia, suffered lacerations to her hand, neck, and head. Her 23-year-old companion sustained machete wounds to his shoulder, forearm, and shin. Police say Mairena-Garcia attacked both victims immediately upon entry, offering no explanation or verbal confrontation before wielding the weapon.
The female victim told investigators Mairena-Garcia had previously made multiple death threats through text messages and in-person encounters. During the assault, she stated he remained completely silent while cutting and attacking them with the machete. Both victims managed to flee the residence, with the male victim running down Edgewood Drive as Mairena-Garcia pursued him with the weapon raised.
Confession And Arrest
Brown County Sheriff’s deputies tracked Mairena-Garcia’s black SUV using Flock camera technology and arrested him during a traffic stop shortly after the attack. During questioning, he admitted to investigators he wanted to kill both victims after discovering them together. Mairena-Garcia stated he saw his former partner and another man in bed, causing him to lose control and black out from rage. He led officers to the machete he had thrown from his vehicle while fleeing the scene.
Prior Criminal History
Court records reveal Mairena-Garcia had an existing criminal record in Wisconsin before this violent attack. He accumulated three guilty verdicts for operating without a valid driver’s license and faced an open hit-and-run case at the time of his arrest. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed an active detainer on him while he remains in Brown County Jail. A judge set his cash bond at $750,000. Law enforcement has not disclosed the current medical condition of either victim or confirmed whether the couple’s child was present during the assault.
