A Salvadoran national who entered the United States as an unaccompanied minor during the Obama administration now faces murder charges after allegedly stabbing two women to death in separate attacks on Long Island. The brutal crimes have reignited concerns about border security and the long-term consequences of immigration policies.

Multiple Stab Wounds in Rage-Fueled Attacks

Rony Yahir Alvarenga Rivera, 22, was arrested Friday following two separate fatal stabbings. Police responded just after midnight to a Wendy’s restaurant on Austin Boulevard in Island Park, where Ana Maria del Aguila-Cordova, 42, was found stabbed to death while taking out garbage. The victim leaves behind two young children, ages eight and one. Investigators described both crime scenes as evidence of extreme anger, with each victim suffering multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso.

After the Wendy’s attack, Alvarenga Rivera contacted police himself. Detective Lieutenant George Darienzo explained that officers received information about an individual stopped at 169 Atlantic Avenue in Lynbrook who specifically asked to see police. When officers arrived, the suspect reportedly confessed to killing someone that night. Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder characterized the attacks as driven by pure rage, though investigators have not disclosed specific motives beyond anger.

Second Victim Discovered Hours Earlier

Alvarenga Rivera’s 32-year-old roommate was discovered deceased at her residence on West Mineola Avenue in Valley Stream around three o’clock Friday morning. Police believe this first murder occurred Thursday night around nine o’clock. Both victims worked with the suspect, and investigators are examining workplace relationships and personal connections. The suspect lived in the United States for a decade after crossing the border illegally in 2016 as a 12-year-old child from El Salvador.

Legal Proceedings Begin

Alvarenga Rivera has been charged with First Degree Murder and Second Degree Murder. He entered not guilty pleas to both charges. The case highlights ongoing debates about immigration enforcement, background checks, and monitoring systems for individuals who entered the country as unaccompanied minors. Ana Maria del Aguila-Cordova’s family now faces the devastating task of raising two young children without their mother, while questions mount about how this tragedy might have been prevented.
