Strait of Hormuz Hit—Why Now?

Warships maneuvering at sea, leaving a white wake.

Iran launched drone strikes on Bahrain and hit a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, putting a fragile ceasefire with the U.S. on the brink of collapse.

Story Highlights

  • U.S. Central Command called the IRGC’s claim of a successful strike “false” and said all Iranian attacks on American forces were stopped.
  • A tanker was hit in the Strait of Hormuz, confirmed by British military, as Iran escalated attacks on commercial shipping.
  • Vice President J.D. Vance warned Iran that “violence will be met with violence,” raising fears the ceasefire deal is falling apart.

Iran Launches Drones at U.S. Base in Bahrain

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a drone attack targeting the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, at around 2:30 a.m. local time on June 27, 2026. The IRGC said it used Shahed-136 drones and called the strike payback for earlier U.S. airstrikes on the Iranian cities of Jask, Sirik, and Qeshm. Bahrain sounded air raid sirens and told residents to seek shelter. Locals reported hearing more than 16 explosions during the attack. [1]

The IRGC also claimed it shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone during the same period, adding to a list of bold assertions from Tehran. Iran’s parliament members called U.S. strikes a “reckless violation of the ceasefire.” The IRGC warned it would deliver “heavier responses” if U.S. attacks continued. These threats signal Iran has no intention of backing down, even as its military claims remain unverified by outside sources. [2]

U.S. Military Denies Iran’s Claims of Success

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) flatly rejected Iran’s claim that it successfully struck the Fifth Fleet base. CENTCOM stated on X that all Iranian drone and missile attacks on American forces failed, and labeled the IRGC’s boasts as “false.” [12] U.S. and partner air defenses intercepted multiple Iranian drones and missiles targeting both Bahrain and Kuwait. CENTCOM reported that two missiles fell short of their targets and three more were shot down by air defense forces. [15]

Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry condemned the drone assault as a “flagrant threat to the security of citizens and residents.” The ministry called it a violation of sovereignty that undermines peace in the region. No independent group has confirmed damage to the Fifth Fleet base, and no photos or video evidence of a successful strike on the compound have emerged. Iran’s claims follow a well-worn pattern — Tehran asserts success, the U.S. denies it, and the truth remains murky. [11]

Ship Struck in Strait of Hormuz, Ceasefire in Danger

British military officials confirmed that a tanker was struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz during the same wave of Iranian attacks. The ship sustained damage, though no crew members were reported injured. Iran has been targeting commercial shipping in the strait as part of its broader pressure campaign against the U.S. and its regional allies. The strait is one of the world’s most critical oil shipping lanes, and attacks there threaten global energy markets. [8]

Vice President J.D. Vance posted a firm warning to Iran, saying the U.S. has honored the ceasefire and that any further violence will be answered in kind. President Trump declined to say whether the ceasefire was still in effect, leaving the door open for more U.S. military action. Analysts note that Iran still holds roughly 70% of its pre-war missile capability, meaning it can keep up this campaign for some time. The back-and-forth strikes are pushing a fragile peace deal toward the breaking point, with serious consequences for the entire Gulf region. [15]
